Checklist to follow before or after the water damage is done

Once the floodwater starts receding and the cleaning process is over, often people wish to get back in their business or home to start with the rebuilding process. But the problem is the wood that has already water submerged well is likely to have a huge water amount. Rebuilding quickly after the flood damage is likely to increase the problem of insect infestation, mold growth, and even wood deterioration along with the wall coverings. If you have been the victim of the same and don’t want to get in trouble again, then here is some checklist you should be ready with.

Check with the claims:

As a part of the flood damage restoration, you might want to check with the flood insurance. You can contact the insurance adjuster quickly. Besides, the cleaning should be initiated, salvage and even the drying should do. You don’t have to wait for the adjuster. Simply take the pictures for inventory use.

Clean the home so the adjuster can have a better idea of how serious the damage has been. Make sure you give them the phone number so they can get back to you with the right solution.  If you don’t have any flood insurance then your insurance of the house is not likely to cover such losses.

Electrical issues:

You need to be sure that services of the gas and electricity are turned off properly. Before you even enter the premises after the flood for the first time, you should take care of these services. If you have any electrician nearby who can check for the unsafe conditions and grounds, then make sure you call them before you enter the house and reconnect the whole system.

Sanitation of Food and Water

Till the time your local water company or public health department doesn’t declare that the water source is safe and can purify the water, you must restrict yourself from cooking and drinking. Besides, washing any body part or even doing the dishes should be avoided. You can however strain the water from a clean cloth or use a filter if possible. In case there is any undamaged or there has been commercially prepared food available in the can, it can be saved if the labels are removed. Make sure you wash the can well and rinse it, Disinfecting them is crucial for the same.

Other than this carpet and another furnishing should be checked well while the wall should also be checked to make sure there is no serious damage that must have happened.

Conclusion:

Flood water is not clean water. That is why most porous building materials need to be replaced and removed using some new materials.  It is important to check the electrical damages from the outer area, the electrical safety should be also done once the flood has happened, the chlorine bleach should not be mixed with vinegar and of all, it is important to wear rubber gloves, sturdy shoes, and even the eye protection during the whole checklist process. Make sure this time you prepare yourself for the water damage repair and act quickly.
